18th Century British Painting

Joe E. Stewart

From February 22nd to March 12th

“18th Century Painting” brings together Stewarts loose but calculated painting style and an influence left by legacy the 18th Century British Painters. Drawing on the strong morals and ethics imbued in paintings by artists such as Gainsborough, Hogarth, Fielding, and Reynolds, Stewart presents a series of paintings and drawings which work to honour and at the same time contrast a time in painting when purity and ethics were very serious formal concerns. This series of paintings expresses a deep obsession within the tanks of painting history, and exemplifies Stewarts approach as a painter rooted in his research. Exploring the classical pose, the pastoral, and the mundane are all an attempt for Stewart to reconcile his own act of painting and the trajectory of history in a time that finds so many attempts at innovation and flash.
