Nigel Nolan's new series of rich watercolours, presents the male and female form in a painted narrative of undress. Using the traditionally unforgiving medium of watercolour paint, the series explores the emotions inherent in being stripped of one's clothing, and by extension, one's personal power. Drenched in the heavily applied layers, and acute detail typical of Nolan's work, Disrobe conveys an aggressive, sexualized, yet poetic narrative of strength descending into vulnerability.
Building on the impact of work by artists such as William Kentridge, Max Beckmann and Cherry Hood, Nolan's expressive figurative explorations push his work into an international arena. Following three extremely successful exhibitions at Lehmann + Leskiw Fine Art, Nolan's career is flourishing with interest and focus emerging in the Toronto scene and abroad.
