Opening November 24th, 2006 from 7-10pm
Emmy Skensved, currently pursuing her MFA at the University of Waterloo and recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design where she won the Drawing and Painting Medal in 2004, presents "Luxury Good", Luxury Good explores the surging interest in the application of fashion and textile design motifs in contemporary art. New works on canvas and panel are produced through the layering of handmade acrylic decals and paint. Exploring the fabric of popular and luxury culture, Skensveds paintings force motifs which often function as silent background to the forefront confronting us with images constructed of magnified patterns. Punching out in blacks and whites, the symbols become the subject matter, exploring the reemergence of Ornament as surface.
Skensved's work has earned her numerois accolades including multiple scholarships upon graduation from the Ontario College of Art and Design, Reviews in the Globe and Mail as well as The Keith and Win Shantz Summer Internship from the University of Waterloo. This provided Skensved the opportunity to work in Berlin with Danish artist Kirstine Roepstorff.
