Michael Antkowiak

From April 17th to May 3rd
Opening April 17th, 2014 from 6-9pm

Monads draws upon the modernist themes of isolation and alienation. Sourcing imagery from webcam sites for his subject, Antowiak is interested in an intersection of contemporary and art historical forms of self-expression.

Antkowiak’s paintings evoke the modernist model of expression, and the idea of the monad, through the depiction of a contemporary hermetically sealed space — the domestic interior. The theme of the alienated subject within a symbolic interior is prevalent throughout modern history. There exists an equivalent in the images of web cam exhibitionists who engage in banal displays, all contained within their generic spaces. Monads marks Antkowiak’s first solo exhibition with LE Gallery.

Michael Antkowiak (Warsaw, Poland, 1977) is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, and completed his MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2003. He has since exhibited in public and commercial galleries in Canada and abroad, including the Queens Museum of Art, in New York City.
